Nothing, absolutely nothing goes right for RIM

BlackBerry or iPhone? It’s been a battle for years, but Apple’s smartphone offering may be the healthier pick for anyone with allergies, according to new research from the U.S.Nickel used in the production of the Canadian Research In Motion product has been found on the device’s buttons and keyboards, where it could cause an allergic reaction such as dry, itchy skin, says a study presented at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).

What happens next, you touch a BlackBerry and puppies cry out in pain?

iMessage causes decline in text messaging

Though that’s a small dip, the change is noteworthy because for several years, text messaging had been steadily growing in the United States. Mr. Sharma said it was too early to tell whether the decline here would continue, but he noted that Internet-based messaging services, like Facebook messaging and Apple’s iMessage, had been chomping away at SMS usage. He said the decline would become more pronounced as more people buy smartphones.

At this point, I think there is only one person that I’ve texted in the past couple of months — everyone else has been an iMessage. I’ll admit, I’m not sad to see the carriers get screwed with lost revenue after making us pay exorbitant fees for years.

Samsung’s dick move

“Samsung Electronics recently asked Apple for a significant price raise in (the mobile processor known as) application processor,” the person was quoted as saying in the report. “Apple first disapproved it, but finding no replacement supplier, it accepted the (increase.)”

Samsung gets caught stealing Apple’s designs, so they raise the price of the chips by 20 percent.

Apple’s app approval process

Tricia Duryee for All Things D:

Apple has been criticized for a slow approval process before, and many delight in the fact that Google’s Android has none at all.

Okay, I’ve heard about Apple’s approval process slowing down, as it does sometimes, but comparing it to Google is just ridiculous. Android is infested with malware and to not even bring that up is misleading readers.

AT&T and FaceTime

AT&T has made a shift in its highly unpopular FaceTime over cellular policies today. Previously, it would allow the use of FaceTime only on Mobile Share plans, now it will allow any LTE device customers (aka those with an iPhone 5 and LTE iPads) on a tiered data plan to use FaceTime over cellular.

That still leaves 3G devices out of the mix. However, there are far fewer LTE devices being used than 3G and I don’t think AT&T’s network could handle all the traffic if they opened it up completely.

BlackBerry 10 likely dead on arrival

“We believe BB10 is likely to be DOA,” James Faucette, a Pacific Crest analyst in Portland, Oregon, said in a report. He has the equivalent of a sell rating on the shares. “We expect the new OS to be met with a lukewarm response at best and ultimately likely to fail.”

Well, RIM has its patents.

Frictionless experience

Apple’s true advantage is when applications are available across all three platforms, offering a device-optimized and consistent experience no matter what I am using. They offer a frictionless experience.

Apple wants to add Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to Samsung lawsuit

Apple made the arguments today to U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul S. Grewal in federal court in San Jose. Apple’s bid to expand the lawsuit follows Samsung’s Oct. 1 move to add patent- infringement claims against the iPhone 5 in the same case.

Here we go.

Nokia prices Lumia ‘aggressively’

The Nokia Lumia 820 starts at $49.99 with a two-year wireless contract from AT&T while the flagship Lumia 920 phones start at $99.99 with the same contract terms.

That’s much more aggressive than what I would have thought. Seems they are going straight for the low-end market.

David Gilmour concert as an iPhone, iPad app

The best-selling ‘David Gilmour In Concert’ full-length show, originally released on DVD, is now available as an App for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

It’s being released November 19.

Hackers infect Android apps, steal 10 million pieces of personal info

Intial reports said that about 90,000 smartphones users were infected with a virus lurking in applications they downloaded, But later they found that developers stole more than 10 million pieces of personal information from users mobile.

Android is just so awesome, being all open and such.

Dear Ed Conway: Go already

I figured the least I could do is to explain my decision in full – I like to think it might help protect you from nasty break-ups like this in the future.

This is the longest, most boring break-up letter in history. Please Ed, just go.

Samsung to question Schiller

In an order filed on Thursday, it was revealed that Samsung will be able to question Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller for up to three hours, with the deposition expected to cover matters associated with Apple’s request to ban products a jury found to be in violation of its patents.

Schiller can handle himself.

iOS 6.0.1 available

Connect you iOS device to iTunes and click “Check for Update.”

And this is why I don’t trust analysts

“Apple’s innovation is sputtering,” [Trip] Chowdhry wrote in a research note to clients. “Why is that Apple, the company that brought touch to phones and tablets, stopped just there and did not bring touch to notebooks and iMacs? Why is it that Apple brought high-resolution screens to…some MacBooks and not to all devices? High-resolution screens are a commodity today.”

Well Trip, people tend to use computers in a different way than they use tablets and phones. It makes no sense to push out touch enabled displays on products that people expect to use a keyboard and mouse.

Apple does use high-resolution displays, but Retina displays are not a commodity. With a price conscious customer in mind, Apple has to balance its products to offer the best it can for a reasonable price.

I hope that answered your question Trip.

iPhone 5 slows Android growth

Recent smartphone sales data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows Android continuing to gain share across Europe in latest 12 weeks of sales increasing its share to 67.1% share, up from 50.9% a year ago. However, its rate of growth has slowed as week one of iPhone 5 sales show iOS gaining in the US and Great Britain.

Pentagon buying iPhones

The Pentagon is planning to open its network for the first time to Apple iPhones and devices running Google’s Android operating system, a threat to BlackBerry maker Research in Motion.

A threat? No, that’s devastating for RIM.
