Apple announces USB Power Adapter Takeback Program

Apple on Monday announced its USB Power Adapter Takeback Program, a program that will allow customers to return third-party adapters they feel are faulty. Apple is offering those customers a special price on obtaining a new Apple adapter. […]

Obama should veto the ITC iPhone, iPad ban

We have less than a week before an order from the International Trade Commission takes effect, banning the sale of iPhone 4 and iPad 2 in the United States. President Obama can veto the order, but he has to do so this week, before the August 5 ban begins. […]

Apple still leads mobile profits

Daniel Eran Dilger for AppleInsider:

Strategy Analytics is attempting to estimate mobile handset profit shares for both companies. While it generated a lot of coverage for its report, the numbers not only don’t reflect reality, but they were further mangled by sloppy reporting from a variety of major tech websites.

I’m shocked. It’s a great article.

Global Telecom injects JavaScript into Web sites when using 3G

What Globe Telecom is adding is what they call iToolbar. It’s basically an opportunity for them to track what you do, and inject ads into the sites you go to.

That’s just sleazy, but the best part is their answer to whether they will push unwarranted advertising.

A matter of personal choice

I agree with a lot of what Shaun McGill says in this article. We have come a long way from the days of Palm and using a device as a PDA. Now we have a computer in our pocket and your computer is a matter of personal choice.

“Most Android phones are crap”

Farhad Manjoo for Slate:

It’s hard to call Android anything other than a resounding success.

Well, except for one small thing: Most Android phones are crap. As part of a New Year’s resolution, I promised to trade in my beloved iPhone 5 for an Android phone sometime in 2013. I reasoned that, as a tech writer, I should spend more time with the world’s most popular operating system. Phone makers and carriers have regularly sent me Android phones to test out in the past, but I’d never given most of them more than a passing look—I’d open them up, turn them on, get aggravated by their bad keyboards or poor touchscreens or frustrating add-on software, and I immediately package them up and send them back.

Pretty damning article for Android.

Breaking Bad book available exclusively on iBookstore

The end of Breaking Bad is coming in just under a month, with the final episode airing this season. To help fans celebrate the series, Sony has released what it calls “the ultimate interactive fan experience,” with a new digital book available exclusively on the iBookstore.

Robber steals iPhone, leaves his Samsung in its place

A man smashed a case in a Springfield wireless store and escaped with several iPhones, but the scheme was foiled by one glaring oversight: The robber, police say, left his own Samsung Galaxy at the scene of the crime.

LOL.

BlackBerry set to cut more jobs

As part of its restructuring, the company is planning to cut more jobs across middle management in the sales and support divisions, say people familiar with the matter, on top of the 5,000 layoffs last fiscal year.

Part of the latest cuts included Richard Piasentin, the company’s vice president for sales in the U.S., who was fired last month, these people said.

At some point there will be no more fat to cut from the company. I doubt it’s the sales teams fault—It sounds more like people just don’t want the product.

Verizon could owe Apple $14 billion

Because of slower-than-expected sales, Verizon now must double its iPhone sales of last year. If it falls short, the company could be on the hook for as much as $14 billion, Moffett Research said in a report released this week.

That’s an incredible amount of money to pay because you didn’t sell as many iPhones as expected. However, I don’t know of any other carrier in the world that hasn’t met sales expectations.

Lumia 1020

BGR had some time with the new Nokia Lumia.

Zombies and assholes

Sascha Segan:

So you see the self-serving nature of this study: Adeven is trying to boost its business by making app developers worry they won’t make any money without Adeven. In the meantime, the company promotes a half-blind idea of what Apple’s App Store is. That’s why I’m not actually linking to the study here.

When are the mainstream media going to get off their asses and realize that the “research” from these companies are designed to help those companies sell their products. Nothing else. The BBC, CNBC and the others are just assholes for falling for this type of marketing.

iOS 7 dynamics

Rene Ritchie:

It’s not pixels painted so much anymore as particles placed, and not areas touched so much as directly manipulated.

Rene’s right in saying that there’s a lot going on with iOS 7 beyond the design. The way the operating system interacts with things around it is amazing.

Samsung Galaxy S3 bursts into flames

I have to agree with Philip Elmer-Dewitt here; where are all the articles claiming Samsung is doomed? That’s what would happen if it was Apple.
