Apple granted the mother of all mobile patents

It may sound snoozy, but the patent — which covers graphical user interfaces ranging from email to Camera Roll to menu lists to the multi-touch interface in general — looks like a dangerous weapon for Apple as it battles Android handset makers.

I don’t usually post about patents, but this is a doozy.

Early photos of iPad prototype

During the course of the deposition, Ive at one point is shown photos of a three-dimensional mockup of a tablet that Apple produced as part of the discovery process. It’s referred to as the 035 mockup or prototype.

iPad is revolutionizing playbooks for NFL

Jeff Darlington for NFL.com:

No longer must Boxer – or anyone – seek out a player to deliver game film. It can be remotely uploaded to a player’s iPad while they are in their own living room through a WiFi signal. No longer must the “drop-off” take place on Wednesdays, either. Players will have their edited material uploaded 2 ½ hours after a game. The iPad revolution is upon us.

Indeed.

‘Batman: Earth One’ available on Apple’s iBookstore

DC Entertainment on Wednesday released ‘Batman: Earth One’ on the iBookstore. The company said this is the first of many graphic novels it will release on the iBookStore.

The book was done by author Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank.

Office 2013 is sad on touch devices

These are not touch applications, and you will not want to use them on touch systems. They’re designed for mice and they’re designed for keyboards, and making the buttons on the ribbon larger does nothing to change that fundamental fact.

This is exactly what I’ve said all along. Desktop apps do not transition to a touch-enabled environment very well at all. No matter how much Microsoft wants it to work, it’s not going to happen. This is why Apple developed touch-enabled versions of Keynote, Numbers and Pages.

30+ iPhone, iPad apps for the London Olympics

The Olympic Games begin in London, England on July 27 and run through August 12, 2012. I’ve put together a list of apps to help you with travel, organization, photos and sightseeing, so you can get the most out of the games this year. […]

These are the people that will buy a Surface

David Gewirtz:

For example, to connect to my corporate servers, I need a specialized VPN client that only runs on Windows. I can’t open a path to my servers unless I have a Windows computer, which means even if I took my iPad, I’d still need a laptop to open a gateway to do company work. A full Windows 8 Surface would be nice to carry and would eliminate needing to carry the laptop.

Microsoft’s real competition: PC manufacturers

Mat Honan:

Microsoft’s biggest consumer success over the past decade has been Xbox. It needs to replicate that success, and the only way it can be assured of doing that, at least in the short term, is to screw its hardware partners.

I couldn’t agree more. For better or worse, Microsoft needs to go for it.

App approval process

Scoople surveys its users with questions in its iPhone app. The latest questions, about the app approval process, had some interesting results including almost half think malware will be a significant issue. I don’t think it will myself.

Proloquo2Go 2.0 for iPad helps children communicate

After months of keeping this very exciting project top secret, we are very happy to finally tell you about the new children’s voices for Proloquo2Go. As a first in the industry, AssistiveWare and Acapela Group have developed two authentic British children’s voices: Harry and Rosie.Up until now, children with communication difficulties could only speak with an adult Text to Speech (TTS) voice or artificially emulated children’s TTS voices that sounded robotic and not genuine.

I met with the CEO of AssistiveWare in San Francisco when I was there in June and saw the app in action. It was truly amazing to see what this company is doing to help people communicate more efficiently using their app and an iPad.

They’ve posted a few videos of the children’s voices for the U.K. on their Web site. Children’s voices for the U.S. market are in the works too.

This is why iCloud isn’t in more apps

Kyle Baxter:

…naturally I’ve also been thinking through how syncing should work. This seems like an easy question to answer: iCloud. If only. I wish it were that easy, but it’s not.

As a user, I want iCloud implemented in everything I use. However, for developers, there are reasons why iCloud doesn’t make sense yet.

Netflix business model for magazines

First off, full disclosure – I hate digital magazines. I love print magazines. Digital has huge file sizes, annoying download issues, widely varying user interfaces and price structures. Print is print, for better or worse. […]

Unofficial Spotify app on Kickstarter

As you might or might not know, Spotify terms and conditions don’t allow developers to make money from app sales or advertising. That means I need your support to make this a reality.

A brief history of the iPad

Dave Caolo’s “A Brief History of the iPad” kicked off today with a prologue that traces the ancestors of modern tablet computing.

Nexus 7 is not a game changer

Jerry Hildenbrand, Android Central:

The Nexus 7 doesn’t bring a compelling reason to “go Google” when considering a tablet purchase like we were hoping.

More ways the iPad can’t create cool things

Wes Ball goes through his workflow during the production of his short film, RUIN.

Incredible video, but if you go to about 1:30 he talks about using the iPad to create the trees for the project (Yes, I said create). […]

iPad helps scientists

Joel Mathis, Macworld:

It wasn’t so long ago that Chris Grant would regularly take a whole laboratory’s worth of equipment with him into the wilderness. These days, he just takes an iPad.

This must be wrong. The iPad is only for consumption.

Judge: Samsung ‘not as cool’ as Apple

Samsung Electronics defeated Apple in the latest spat in the rivals’ patent wars when a British judge ruled Samsung’s Galaxy tablets did not infringe the U.S. company’s designs for the iPad because they were “not as cool”.

I laughed. Hard.

One announcement away from destroying the Nexus

Abdel Ibrahim:

But unfortunately for Amazon and Google, as good as their impending tablets are shaping up to be, Apple’s got something up its sleeve, too.

I agree with Abdel on Google, but not as much with Amazon. When Apple releases its smaller iPad, all tablet manufacturers are going to feel the heat — there is no doubt in my mind about that. However, I believe people purchase the Amazon products for a different reason. They buy into the Kindle brand as opposed to just purchasing a tablet. While some people may choose to buy the smaller iPad, many will continue to buy the Kindle because it does the one thing they really want from it — read books.

The bullshit story of the week

There’s a a lot of shit stories out there, but a site called “Trusted Reviews” outdid everyone. They actually did a comparison between the Microsoft Surface and the iPad to see which one was better.

How in the sweet hell do you compare a product that isn’t on the market, nobody has touched and we don’t know the full specs or even price.

Bullshit.

The stylus

I have mercilessly ridiculed products like the Samsung Galaxy Note and the Microsoft Surface for including a stylus. Here’s why. […]

Bill Gates is wrong

From my latest column on Techpinions:

By trying to combine what people do on their PC with what they want to do on a tablet, Microsoft feels it is offering the best of both worlds. The problem with that, as I’ve said before, is that people interact differently with a PC than they do a computer. So, in reality, you don’t get the best of both worlds, but rather a mishmash of each.

Corrupt App Store binaries

An explanation from Marco Arment about what happened to his Instapaper update for iOS last night. After downloading the update, the app would just crash on launch.
