MG Siegler on the Microsoft Surface

In hindsight, I now see why Microsoft did not want me to review the Surface. That was probably the right call from a PR perspective. It’s simply not a good product.

After using it for over a week now, it’s hard to come up with a lot of nice things to say about the Surface. Don’t get me wrong, there are some solid things here. But by and large, it’s a strange, buggy, and clunky product that I simply can’t imagine many people buying after the initial hype wears off.

That’s near the beginning of the review. It gets worse.

Microsoft sued over Surface storage

He discovered that a significant portion of the 32 GB storage space was being used by the operating system and pre-installed apps such as Word and Excel. Only 16 GB was available for him to use.

Seriously, 16GB for the operating system and apps is a bit much.

‘Dumbfellas’ behind JFK iPad mini heist

The FBI made an arrest in the heist of 3,600 iPad minis from JFK airport in New York; the suspect asked when the iPads were due to arrive and where a forklift might be found.

You have got to be fucking kidding me

Tired of the bold, yet unsubstantiated claims of financial analysts, the L.A. Times turns to a bastion of data analysis for its latest story… CouponCodes4u.com.

On Thursday, the folks behind CouponCodes4u.com made a bold prediction: They say the Kindle Fire HD will outsell the iPad mini by 2 to 1.

To back up that claim, the coupon clearing house website cited data collected from its website that shows nearly twice as many searches for the words “Kindle Fire HD” compared with “iPad mini” in the last three weeks.

Pathetic.

Here’s an analogy I posted on Twitter:

Equivalent of @latimes iPad mini/Kindle story is asking Ferrari club how many will buy a Corolla, then concluding Ferrari will outsell them.

Nokia Maps coming to the App Store

The company said on Tuesday that in the coming weeks it would release a maps app called Here in Apple’s App Store. It will be a free download for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch owners.

Good. More choice is better for consumers.

iPad mini for photographers

Jeff Carlson takes a look at the iPad mini from a photographer’s perspective. Carlson previously published a book called “iPad for Photographers” so he has some good insight on the subject.

I stand by my iPad mini review

Dave Winer at Gizmodo:

By the way, this is why the orchestrated reviews of products are often worthless. I invite Mossberg, Pogue or Gruber to re-review their iPad Mini now, a week after their initial reviews, and let us know if they’re actually using it. And if they still think it’s a winner. I believe it’s not only not a winner, but it signals a new Apple that’s no longer beyond compare, no longer insisting on delighting its users to the point of orgasm.

Dave didn’t ask, but I stand by my review and I’m still using my iPad mini.

Samsung’s dick move

“Samsung Electronics recently asked Apple for a significant price raise in (the mobile processor known as) application processor,” the person was quoted as saying in the report. “Apple first disapproved it, but finding no replacement supplier, it accepted the (increase.)”

Samsung gets caught stealing Apple’s designs, so they raise the price of the chips by 20 percent.

Shitheads

Dumb apes at Walmart throw iPads.

Apple’s app approval process

Tricia Duryee for All Things D:

Apple has been criticized for a slow approval process before, and many delight in the fact that Google’s Android has none at all.

Okay, I’ve heard about Apple’s approval process slowing down, as it does sometimes, but comparing it to Google is just ridiculous. Android is infested with malware and to not even bring that up is misleading readers.

AT&T and FaceTime

AT&T has made a shift in its highly unpopular FaceTime over cellular policies today. Previously, it would allow the use of FaceTime only on Mobile Share plans, now it will allow any LTE device customers (aka those with an iPhone 5 and LTE iPads) on a tiered data plan to use FaceTime over cellular.

That still leaves 3G devices out of the mix. However, there are far fewer LTE devices being used than 3G and I don’t think AT&T’s network could handle all the traffic if they opened it up completely.

Nexus 7 support sucks

I’m seriously disappointed in Google not standing behind a defective Nexus 7, just because I didn’t purchase it from them. Apple and Amazon stand behind their products no matter where you purchased them.

Stay classy Google.

Frictionless experience

Apple’s true advantage is when applications are available across all three platforms, offering a device-optimized and consistent experience no matter what I am using. They offer a frictionless experience.
