For many reasons, Ali was a personal hero of mine. I was honoured to have met him late in his life at during Apple Masters event at Macworld Expo. For me, there is no doubt this is the greatest sports photograph of all time made even more so when you hear the story behind it. Great, consistent photography takes skill but it also takes a measure of luck. Leifer was incredibly lucky to get this shot.
Bolas de Fuego, the annual fireball street fight in El Salvador
“Hey, Siri. Remind me not to take a vacation in Nejapa, El Salvador on August 31st.”
“Distracted pedestrians” is not a thing
There’s reason to believe this data is applicable to other cities. As the article states, “But the larger message is clear: Drivers are to blame, and roadways must be made safe so that their errors and speeding do not result in death.”
Apple scraps Richard Gere drama ‘Bastards’
This is “big news” mostly for the Apple connection. TV series get scrapped at this stage all the time in Hollywood. But it also may point to the tone Apple wants for its Apple TV+ series’.
The greatest cut in film history: the “Match Cut” immortalized by Lawrence of Arabia
If you would tell me I could see only one film in 70mm in a theater, I’d pick this one.
Hello, Computer: inside Apple’s Voice Control
Aquino does a deep dive into the workings of Voice Control and how it will increase accessibility for many Mac users.
Gorgeous photos of undersea life, in black and white
We usually think of underwater photography as not a good subject for black and white images but these are amazing photos.
Bugatti Chiron sets world record with 304-mph top speed
Someone could offer to let me do this test drive and I still wouldn’t drive this car that fast.
Crazy compilation Nürburgring
The Nürburgring is a race track that allows the public to pay 22 Euros to do a lap. It’s hilarious to watch the variety of cars that will “race” around.
The best slow cooker
I know The Loop’s publisher just got a slow cooker and is enjoying using it. I’ve had one for a year and love it as well. They are especially good for throwing everything in the pot in the morning and coming home after work to an already done meal.
How to open items in the enclosing folder directly from a Spotlight search in macOS
I had no idea about this trick. So helpful.
Ridley Scott’s sci-fi masterpiece Alien bursts open in rare documentary footage
My wife didn’t believe me that Alien was “just” a “there’s a monster in the house!” horror movie until we watched it again. But it’s a great horror movie.

Panic: The untold story of the 2008 financial crisis

Sources say China used iPhone hacks to target Uyghur Muslims
When this story first broke, like many of you, I wanted to know the motives behind the attacks as well as what websites were infected. Now we may have an idea.
Hey, Apple – the Activity app needs rest days like right now
Unlike Ged, I’m not a “slave” to my Apple Watch rings but, as I said on Twitter, the Activity app does need more customization similar to what he writes about.
How Adobe InDesign took over publishing with Steve Jobs’ help
Us oldtimers remember back in the day when QuarkXPress ruled desktop publishing but due to a lack of competition (among other things), Quark rested on its laurels and became a customer hostile company. It opened the door for Adobe.
What does America have against vacation?
When I lived in the US, I was appalled at how little vacation time was mandated. Turns out, it was even worse than I realized.
It’s fun to play with this colorful fluid simulator
I’m having way too much fun poking around on this simulator.
What it’s like to eject out of a military jet
There are lots of things I would have loved to experience in a fighter jet but ejecting out of the seat is not one of them.
Why Tim Hortons struggles in the United States
Tim Hortons is a Canadian institution. I love the stat in the video that there is one Starbucks for every 42,000+ Americans, one Dunkin Donuts for every 38,000+ Americans but one Timmies for every 9,800 Canadians. That’s incredible market penetration here in Canada. But their lack of success to even make a dent in the US market is a fascinating study in business failure.
Apple reverses stance on iPhone repairs and will supply parts to independent shops for the first time
This is undoubtedly a reaction to the “right to repair” movement with Apple trying to head off legislation. The good news is that the new program is free for independent repair shops to join.
Dark Noise Review: ambient noise never looked so good
We occasionally use a noise generator called Noizio for its simplicity – we only ever use the “rainfall” setting – but if you need something more, check out Dark Noise.

Deconstructing Google’s excuses on tracking protection
Google taking this tack is disingenuous at best.
Dear iPhone users: Please don’t forget that a green bubble is a person
This issue has to be one of the funniest “First World” problems I’ve read about in a while. But there is a justification for some of us – not everyone has unlimited text messages. Here in the backwater that is Canada, some of us still get charged for every incoming and outgoing text/SMS/”green bubble” message. If you’ve got a child who is an active user of text messages, that can add up quickly and cost real money.
One week with Apple Card: what I love and what I hate
Good overview of the Apple Card.
Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” covered in 20 different musical styles
This is brilliant. I don’t play the guitar but I’ve always wanted to learn just so I could play the opening riff to Enter Sandman.
