This is a good article by Abdel Ibrahim that takes you through some apps and hardware you’ll need if you want to watch TV using the Apple TV. I still wish it was easier than what it is.
Apple brings WWDC back to San Jose in 2017
Apple on Thursday will announce that it’s bringing its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) back to San Jose, Calif. This will be the first time WWDC will be in San Jose since 2002— the conference moved to San Francisco in 2003. I spoke to Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing about the move.
BlackBerry hits 0.0% market share
BlackBerry has at last fallen to a rounded 0.0% share among smartphone operating systems, including iOS, Android, and Windows 10 Mobile, following an over seven year decline from its peak market share of approximately 20% in 2009, according to the latest quarterly data from research firm Gartner.
I remember the BlackBerry co-CEOs saying they weren’t worried at all about the release of the iPhone. Idiots.
Twitter battle: Nickelback vs. Arnold Schwarzenegger
Couldn’t resist. Good shots on both sides.
The magic frequencies for EQing
When it comes to EQing, there are certain frequencies that seem predominant for every instrument. Many call them the magic frequencies, because they do tend to work most of the time.
This is a great place to learn what frequencies to use with certain instruments.
Siri and Lego Batman
Cute.
Reboot Twitterrific for Mac on Kickstarter
Twitterrific for Mac was first released 10 years ago way back in 2007 and had regular updates until 2013. Development of Twitterrific has continued exclusively on iOS since then, but many of us still use Twitterrific on the desktop – despite it missing many recent Twitter features and Twitterrific for iOS refinements. It is time we fixed this, but we need your help!
I loved Twitterrific.
Apple hits record high
Apple has climbed 50 percent from lows in the first half of last year and is up 15 percent so far in 2017. It was still short of its all-time intraday high of $134.54, set on April 28, 2015.
Impressive.
Adele, Greg Kurstin, and Logic Pro X
For anyone familiar with Kurstin’s track record, his hand in Adele’s repeat success was no surprise. A multi–Grammy Award nominee, Kurstin is known in the industry as an “artist whisperer” who brings out the best in performers like Sia, Beck, Katy Perry, Foster the People, and many more. He does it by bringing a unique set of producing skills to his sessions — world-class ability as an instrumentalist, deep understanding of music and song structure, and a highly effective writing and producing process that runs through Logic Pro X.
It is truly amazing what talented people can do when they get together to write music.

Billboard’s top 100 power people in the music industry
If the music industry is indeed in turnaround, that’s in no small part due to the digital disrupter at No. 1, the live titan at No. 3, Alexa’s mastermind at No. 12 and the visionary label bosses, tech gurus, artist managers and media moguls (including 41 first-timers!) who comprise Billboard’s annual ranking of executive excellence.
Apple’s Eddy Cue, Jimmy Iovine, and Robert Kondrk are all tied at No. 4, while Larry Jackson and Bozoma Saint John are tied at No. 67.
Oh Samsung
The fire broke out not on the production line itself but in a part of the facility used for waste, including faulty batteries, said Samsung SDI spokesman Shin Yong-doo. He added that most of the factory was running as normal.
A Samsung factory fire caused by faulty batteries… Priceless.
Tim Cook chats with students in Scotland
I really do like Tim.
Variety’s interview with Jimmy Iovine about Apple Music
As much as I may disagree with Apple Music’s focus, I do agree with this.
Yet despite competition from Spotify, Jay Z’s Tidal, and others, Iovine doesn’t believe that streaming has to become a winner-take-all proposition.
“Not if streaming is done right,” he says. What “right” means is that each service is culturally different, he explains, so that each has a different feel. “Yeah, they all have the same catalog, but what we’re doing is we’re just building on top of that. That’s where the personality and the feel will come from.”
I only wish that Apple’s culture included less pandering to celebrities and more focus on the user experience, as well as including a wider variety of musicians and genres they are willing to promote. I doubt that will happen, but one can hope.

Apple hires former Spotify exec
Apple hired former Spotify VP of Content Steve Savoca in January, an Apple spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider.
He’ll be doing the same thing for Apple that he did for Spotify — heading up label relations based out of New York, focusing on relationships with smaller, independent labels, especially internationally, Business Insider has learned.
Sounds like a good choice. Clearly Spotify did well with him doing that job.
Tim Cook to receive Newseum’s 2017 Free Expression Award
The Newseum announced today that Apple CEO Tim Cook will receive the Newseum’s 2017 Free Expression Award in the Free Speech category. Cook, who has led Apple since August 2011, will be recognized for his leadership in creating technology that has had a profound impact on how we communicate. Further, he has used his spotlight to take a public stand on major societal issues, including racial equality, privacy, protecting the environment, access to education and LGBT rights. Cook will accept the award during a special event to be held at the Newseum on April 18, 2017.
Much respect, Tim.
Comcast will treat Rokus like CableCARDs, not set-top boxes
The fees come into play if you continue to use the Roku in addition to your Comcast set-top box after the beta trial wraps. At that point, Comcast will treat the Roku device like any other “additional outlet.” That additional outlet incurs a $9.95 fee, minus the bring-your-own-device credit of $2.50 for using a Roku, instead of Comcast’s box. This is also how a secondary outlet that connects to Comcast’s network via a TiVo would be charged and credited.
Basically business as usual.
Jury issues $500 million verdict in Facebook virtual reality lawsuit
A U.S. jury in Texas on Wednesday ordered Facebook Inc, its virtual reality unit Oculus, and other defendants to pay a combined $500 million to ZeniMax Media Inc, a video game publisher that says Oculus stole its technology.
Ouch.
Retro Keyboard
Inspired by a typewriter—I think this will certainly have its fans when released.
Updating your AirPods firmware
I had no idea there was a firmware update available for the AirPods, but I followed the instructions on TidBITS and sure enough it updated. To be clear, the way the update is done, you’ll eventually get the update, but I did it manually anyway.
Tesla drops ‘Motors’ from name
Tesla Motors Inc changed its name to “Tesla Inc” as Chief Executive Elon Musk looks to transform the Silicon Valley firm from an electric car maker to a diversified energy products company.
It’s weird, I never really considered Tesla as just an automobile company. I always just referred to it as Tesla, knowing that the company had its fingers in a lot of different tech.
Apple reports record first quarter results
Apple on Tuesday reported results for its fiscal first quarter and they were really good. The company posted all-time record quarterly revenue of $78.4 billion and all-time record quarterly earnings per diluted share of $3.36. These results compare to revenue of $75.9 billion and earnings per diluted share of $3.28 in the year-ago quarter. […]
Dogs have music preferences
All of us know that animals respond to music (my cats Roger and Chloe love to hang with me when I mix), but are there certain genres that they like better? A new study by the University of Glasgow in conjunction with the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals found out that shelter dogs definitely had some music preferences.
My dogs loved Ozzy.
Tech companies to meet on legal challenge to immigration order
A group of technology companies plans to meet on Tuesday to discuss filing an amicus brief in support of a lawsuit challenging U.S. President Donald Trump’s order restricting immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries, said a spokesperson for a company organizing the gathering.
Watch this four-year-old play drums
That’s some talent.
Watch Vance Powell track a band using Universal Audio Apollo
Vance Powell is a friend and an amazing audio engineer. He’s worked with some of the best artists in the music industry over the years and at NAMM, he gave a session on how he recorded a project. He goes over the mic choice and even placement of the amps. This is well worth watching.
