Heavy Metal clock

I love this! Dave Mark sent it to me on Twitter this morning and I just sat there laughing.

Testing the new Apple File System

Jeff Butts and Dave Hamilton did some tests on the new Apple File System (APFS) and posted the results. There’s certainly a lot to like, but as with most low-level systems there will be plenty of debate.

Twitter stops counting replies toward character count on web and iOS

Nearly a year ago, Twitter announced it would begin distancing itself from the requirement that all tweets could only contain 140 characters by no longer counting some things – like media attachments or @ replies towards the character count. However, it didn’t begin testing the change with @ replies until last fall. Today, Twitter says this change to replies is rolling out to all users across the web, iOS and Android.

Great news.

Witch 4: Window and tab switching utility

The built-in macOS app switcher is great if all you use are one-window applications. But you probably have many windows open in many apps, possibly with many tabs, and navigating them all is a pain. Enter Witch, with which you can switch everything.

These guys do a great job.

The Deck Network shuts down

Jim Coudal made the announcement on his site today. This is who The Loop and others used to display the one small ad on the sidebar. I’ll be working with companies to fill sponsorship spots on the The Loop, as well as a new membership backend, so those that want to, can help support the site too.

A big thanks to Jim for all that he did with The Deck.

Readdle hires former Apple Mail engineer for Spark

Readdle has hired former Apple Mail engineering manager Terry Blanchard in a position that will focus on creating the “future of email” for Readdle’s popular email client “Spark,” working with an entirely new team of his choosing in Silicon Valley. Blanchard’s new role, per his LinkedIn page, is vice president of engineering for Readdle.

It’s hard to argue that this isn’t a good move for Readdle.

Weedbukx logo is a lawsuit waiting to happen

An eatery in Trenton, NJ, previously known as Weedman’s Joint — that sells food only in a weed-themed setting — is rebranding as “Weedbukx”. I give it 30 days before Starbucks AND Exxon file a trademark suit against them.

I can’t imagine it’ll take that long.

Uber suspends driverless car program after crash

Uber Technologies Inc [UBER.UL] suspended its pilot program for driverless cars on Saturday after a vehicle equipped with the nascent technology crashed on an Arizona roadway, the ride-hailing company and local police said.

That doesn’t sound good, but…

The accident occurred when the driver of a second vehicle “failed to yield” to the Uber vehicle while making a turn, said Josie Montenegro, a spokeswoman for the Tempe Police Department.

I’m not sure that any car, driverless or not, could have avoided a crash in this situation.

Samsung plans to sell refurbished Note 7

Tech giant Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) said on Monday it plans to sell refurbished versions of the Galaxy Note 7 smartphones that were pulled from markets due to fire-prone batteries.

Apple updates iTunes eliminating a hidden feature

Apple today released a revised version of iTunes 12.6, which appears to eliminate a hidden option that may have accidentally been built into the software release.

Shortly after the original release of iTunes 12.6 on Tuesday, a reddit user discovered a “Show on Profile Page” toggle on a Playlist edit page.

Apple is quite clearly looking at social networking in iTunes once again. It makes me cringe to think that they are still trying to be social with music. I suppose it’s another place they can push artists that they pay millions of dollars to have exclusive rights to their music.

SD Clone 3: Backup and Clone SD Cards with Ease

My thanks to Twocanoes Software for sponsoring The Loop with SD Clone 3 this week.

If you do any projects that use SD cards (like the Raspberry Pi), check out SD Clone. SD Clone makes an exact copy of your SD card right on your Mac and makes it easy to restore back to either a single SD card or multiple SD cards at once. You’ve spent a lot of time getting a Raspberry Pi project exactly right and want to make an image of your SD card to protect all that work. SD Clone makes creating an image simple. If you want to make multiple of copies of that SD card to start shipping your project, SD Clone restores up to 8 SD cards at once, making it super fast to do something that was slow and painful before. SD Clone can also check any SD card to make sure it is not failing or isn’t a counterfeit. Learn about these features and more here.

Shelter dogs really excited about being adopted

The day a shelter dog gets adopted is one of the happiest days of its life. No matter where an animal came from or what it’s been through, suddenly it knows that better times are ahead.

This is awesome.

Apple has acquired Workflow, an automation tool for iOS

Apple has finalized a deal to acquire Workflow today — a tool that lets you hook together apps and functions within apps in strings of commands to automate tasks. We’ve been tracking this one for a while but were able to confirm just now that the ink on the deal is drying as we speak.

This is a great app. Good purchase for Apple.
