iPhone takes 51 percent of global smartphone revenues

That’s not units sold, but 51% of total global smartphone revenue. Both have value, but I’d argue that revenue is much more important than units sold. While total unit sales buys influence, revenue buys investment in R&D.

51% of total global smartphone revenues is astonishing.

  1. Eh, Apple has long had enough revenue to fund whatever R&D it wants to do. Money is not the limiting factor there and hasn’t been for a long time.

  2. Apple is much more limited by the talent that it can attract and efficiently use than by its finances.

Also it’s not really revenues that allow investment but operating profits. Much of the revenue number is already committed to suppliers, payroll and fixed costs.

  3. Apple’s competitors invest in R&D? Researching Macrumors and iFixit teardowns can’t cost THAT much money.

    😉
