To give you a sense of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 facial recognition, here’s a video from Mel Tajon showing it in action.
He takes a selfie on one phone, then points his Galaxy Note 8 at the selfie. Note that he doesn’t even need to frame the selfie particularly well and the Note 8 unlocks.

UPDATE: Folks are saying this is the Note 8 in demo mode. Would love a verified source on this, but posting this here to give Samsung the benefit of the doubt. That said, take a read of the New York Times review, which doesn’t fare much better.
People say this device is in demo mode, where it will unlock with any face, not just the face it’s trained on.

You do know this was debunked pretty quickly? The phone is in demo mode and will be unlocked by any object when in demo mode.

I’m not sure if that would make a difference. The problem is the selfie is recognized as a live face, not that it’s recognized as the trained face.
If the check for the face being live is ALSO bypassed by demo mode, you’ve got a point. But you’ve also got a shitty demo at that point.
Hey guys, I’m the one who tweeted that video. Yes, the whole test was done on demo mode at Best Buy (I purposely kept the demo audio, background, and security cables in sight to show that). That’s definitely the biggest (and valid) argument I’ve gotten from Twitter.
I’m open to being proven wrong by a customer who actually owns the device.
This is why I hate facial recognition! Pictures could unlock a phone!
