At its core, this article is a review of Logitech’s new Create iPad Pro keyboard and case:
This new snap-on keyboard is (in my view) not only better than Apple’s, but it completes the smaller iPad Pro as a great productivity device. In fact, I’m writing this entire column using it. It’s from Logitech and it’s called the Create 9.7. It costs $130, which is $19 less than Apple’s Smart Keyboard for the 9.7-inch iPad.
I do see this as a solid solution to a problem: Finally, a case built with the Apple Pencil in mind. I find it incomprehensible that Apple did not solve this problem themselves.
As to replacing my laptop: As I’ve said many times before, the iPad won’t truly be a replacement for my laptop until I can develop iPad apps on one.
Logitech case makes the screen viewing angle too vertical for me..
This article has been posted over and over and over by Verge. They are obviously getting paid a lot of money from Logitech to ‘review’ and promote this keyboard.
BTW the Apple Smart Keyboard is WAY better than these Logitech ones.
Follow the money. The Verge isn’t known as an Android site for nothing.
The Logitech case is probably pretty decent, but like you I prefer Apple’s Smart keyboard.
it’s not just development (though it’s that for me too), it’s a lot of things that are simply easier and extant on OS X. Editing large, complex spreadsheets. Writing text (it’s much easier to select a point in copy in OS X). Database stuff.
It’s not that you can’t do some of this on an iOS device…it’s that you can easily do it on a current laptop, so what’s the compelling argument to move to doing it on iOS? Conversely, there are things that are much easier and better done on an iPad (drawing, sketching and I would bet many video editing tasks that don’t require high CPU power). Each has its place and I don’t really see a problem with that.
I have no issues with the Apple Smart Keyboard. I keep the Pencil in a glass vanilla bean holder, but the Pencil also fits nicely right in front of the screen, above the keyboard. When flat it also stays just fine (magnetically) on the left side of the iPad Pro. No idea about the smaller iPad Pro. Obviously it is a problem for some, but that is not universal.
I find that I’m generally more efficient for context-switching tasks on my MBP. But, if I don’t need anything super-complicated, my iPad Pro does the trick most of the time. (Putting development to the side for the moment.) Still, not all apps support side-by-side or slide-over, file management is a pain, and there are some automation tasks that require serious duct tape and chewing gum to make happen on iOS.
As for the Pencil, I got a magnetic “sleeve” for mine. Adheres where I need it, either to the outside of the Smart Keyboard or directly on the iPad itself. This setup gives me flexibility unlike the CREATE which is a full cover (although the backlighting is really nice).
Indeed, “long” is an understatement, even though I love iOS for many things. There’s no way I could do real world audio, design, video, OR coding work on it right now. Maybe someday.
