Adobe profits rise on strong Creative Cloud

> Adobe Systems Inc, which makes the Photoshop and Acrobat software, reported a higher-than-expected adjusted quarterly profit as demand rose for the subscription-based version of its flagship software package.

Great news for Adobe. It seems clear they made the right decision going with Creative Cloud, even though not all users are behind it.

I know a lot of professional users of Adobe’s software are weighing the costs and some are leaving as a result, but as a person whose very occasional need of Adobe’s creative suite never justified the cost the ability to “rent” them on a monthly basis, or to spread that cost out over time, is a big draw. Before I would only look at alternatives; now Adobe is also a consideration.

With CC your entire content is held hostage to force you to pay Adobe forever. Adobe file formats are highly proprietary, complex and not downwards-compatible (only Photoshop by now is partly OK), so all that is left on your drive is garbage for you 180 days after you stop paying (or you have to go to someone else everytime you need access to it).

For those who don’t care about tomorrow that may be fine. For me CC is pure extortion and Adobe tries hard to block any possible way out of it (CS6 for Mac has no Retina support, even though it does cost money …).

From now on I’ll throw my money in every direction as long it doesn’t hit Adobe. I gave them too much of it already.

Then when investors see their profits drop real hard the next quarter results Adobe stock tumbles.

I don’t know many pros who are in favor of Creative Cloud, but nopt for the reasons you would think. MOst are gripping (and I think rightfully so) that the pricing schedule and services offered are not what many pros need or want. The one size model for subscriptions is difficult for the user who doesn’t need all of the services.
