Square Enix announced Thursday that, at long last, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions is now available for iPhone and iPod touch. The game costs $15.99. Square Enix indicates that an iPad version is coming later this month.
Final Fantasy Tactics is not just a role-playing game, like other Final Fantasy-branded games. Instead, it’s a turn-based strategy game with role-playing elements.
Final Fantasy Tactics takes place in the medieval kingdom of Ivalice, a land burdened with economic and political problems following a protracted war. The story follows the adventures for Ramza and Delita, two childhood friends who face many conflicts through the course of the story because of their different world views.
The game features character design from Akihiko Yoshida and a sweeping soundtrack created by Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata. You can thoroughly customize characters with almost two dozen different jobs and more than 400 abilities. You can even recruit characters you may remember if you’re a fan of other Final Fantasy games, such as Balthier from Final Fantasy XII and Cloud from Final Fantasy VII.
Final Fantasy Tactics was first released for the Sony PlayStation in 1997 and then re-released in 2007 for the PlayStation Portable. The game’s been thoroughly reworked for iOS, with a touch interface that eschews fixed map views for views that can be rotated, moved and changed by sliding and pinching. Load times have been improved and some cut scenes can be skipped. New visuals exclusive for iOS have been added, as well.
In related news, Square Enix has cut the prices of other iOS titles to celebrate Tactics’ release, with up to 50 percent off some titles.
