You may have thought that free apps or even those that are under $5 would be the most popular category among developers, but not in the Mac App Store.

[ad#Google Adsense 300×250 in story]According to a detailed analysis by our friends at TUAW, the most popular price point for Mac apps is in the $20-$50 range. Following that is the $10-20 range, then $4-$5, then $1, and finally free.

There are other ranges in the list as well like over $100, but those are the top five.

According to TUAW, the most popular category in the Mac App Store is games. Kind of surprising to me because of all the complaining about Mac games, but maybe those times are gone. Productivity, Utilities, and Entertainment are also strong categories.
