Apple’s iOS mobile operating system is more popular on the Web than Android and Linux, according to new research data from Net Applications. The research shows that iOS has grown from 0.44 percent in October 2009 to 1.13 percent in August 2010. Over that same period, Google’s Android operating system has grown from 0.02 percent to 0.20 percent.
It’s also interesting to note that iOS now has a larger share than Linux as well. In October 2009, Linux had a 0.96 share of the market, dropping to 0.85 percent in August 2010.
“It’s something to take note of when a mobile operating system passes something that’s been around forever,” Vince Vizzaccaro, a Net Applications vice president, told Computerworld, talking about iOS overtaking Linux. “Mobile’s growth curve is strong, and mobile is becoming quite a phenomenon on the Internet.”
It’s no surprise to see that Windows took the top spot with Mac OS in second place among all operating systems.
