In its 2010 audit of supplier’s facilities, Apple said it found a total of 17 core violations and documented the violations in its Supplier Responsibility report. Among the violations were three cases of underage workers. Apple said three facilities had hired 15-year-old workers when the legal working age in those countries was sixteen.
Apple said a total of 11 underage workers were found across all of its facilities. None of the workers were currently underage and the workers were no longer employed at the factories.
“In each of the three facilities, we required a review of all employment records for the year prior to our audit, as well as a complete analysis of the hiring process to clarify how underage people had been able to gain employment,” said Apple in its audit. “Apple required each facility to develop and institute appropriate management systems—such as more thorough ID checks and verification procedures—to prevent future employment of underage workers.”
The audit also identified eight violations involving excessive recruitment fees; three cases where our supplier contracted with noncertified vendors for hazardous waste disposal; and three cases of falsified records provided during the audit.
Apple said it conducted audits at 102 facilities in China, the Czech Republic, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United States.
