One of the greatest things about my iPhone is having access to my music and music apps. Today, there’s a new one that’s been released that I’m trying out. Scales and Modes is an app that focuses on the “diatonic scales and modes that are fundamental in music theory.” You can view the modes on the music staff and choose whether to display the keyboard or guitar at the same time.
The app is put together very well. The pages have the look of old parchment, which is kind of a cool look for a music app.
The main page lets you choose your root note and which mode you would like to see. After choosing that, you are taken to the scale page where you can hear it played by pressing a button. You can also get some extra information on the mode by tapping on the “info” button. That’s a nice little touch.
I’d make the text a little bigger or maybe a little darker — either one would work for my eyes. That’s more of a personal thing than a knock on the app. I’m sure most people can see it fine.
Scales and Modes is made by Smappsoft and costs $1.99.
