Digidesign’s Pro Tools 8.0.3 pre-release software slipped by me, but it’s important enough that I wanted to make sure I circled back and mentioned it. Pro Tools 8.0.3pr adds support for Apple’s newest operating system, Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The new version, however, does not support the original Mbox, the Expansion|HD Chassis and PowerPC-based Macs.
While the plan for the new version is to support both Leopard and Snow Leopard, currently Digidesign only recommends using 8.0.3pr with Snow Leopard.
The company said most plug-ins seem to work fine with the pre-release software, although Hybrid, Strike, Structure, Transfuser and Velvet have a yellow interface.
Digidesign also said that they do not intend to qualify 64-bit mode at this time because it wouldn’t offer any significant performance advantages. It could also introduce unseen issues for users, the company said.
Pro Tools 8.0.3pr is a free download for current Pro Tools 8 customers. There is also a Snow Leopard Prerelease Forum that’s been setup to handle feedback with the new software.
