Apple bringing Oscar best-picture-nominee CODA to theaters for free

Apple:

Apple Original Films today announced that audience favorite “CODA” will be re-released in theaters for a limited theatrical run following its history-making Academy Award nominations, including a nomination for Best Picture. The film will be presented in major cities across the U.S. and London, free of charge and with open captions.

The free showings are this weekend only, starting Friday. Follow this link to find the theater nearest you.

And if you are in Los Angeles:

Audiences at a special showing in Los Angeles will have the opportunity to be part of a live Q&A with the cast and writer/director Siân Heder, which will have translators in ASL.

Since the showings are free, presumably Apple has to pay the theaters for the privilege.

Interesting that Apple chose this weekend for the showings. It’s a month until Oscar voting closes (March 22nd). But CODA is also nominated for 12 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards, and SAG voting closes at the end of this weekend. Two birds. One stone.

“Who the fuck is Steve Jobs?”

Hollywood Reporter:

Given Scott’s steady productivity and workmanlike approach over a 45-year film career, it’s easy to forget that he is responsible for a remarkable string of culture-defining movies, from genre groundbreakers like Alien and Blade Runner to the intimate female buddy picture Thelma & Louise, to epics like Black Hawk Down, Gladiator and The Martian.

And, of course, that groundbreaking 1984 ad that introduced the Macintosh to the world (embedded below).

My absolute favorite bit from the linked interview:

His most famous ad is Apple’s 1984 Super Bowl spot introducing the Macintosh computer, regarded as one of the most influential ads of all time. When the agency, Chiat/Day, pitched Ridley on directing a spot for Apple, he thought they were talking about The Beatles. “They said, ‘No, no, no. Apple is this guy called Steve Jobs.’ I went, ‘Who the fuck is Steve Jobs?’

Who, indeed. Love this.

New AirPods ad, more silhouettes

Saw this ad on TV over the weekend, video still not showing up on Apple’s YouTube channel. An old ad? New? Well, it’s new to me.

There’s this AirPods silhouettes ad from about a month ago, similar style, but definitely different. It’s on Apple’s channel. Guessing the ad below will pop up soon.

I do like the series, definitely reminds me of those original Apple iPod ads (like these), where the white EarPods stood out in stark relief, really popping.

Intel CEO: My job is to win Apple back

Brian Sozzi, Yahoo Finance:

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger says the ball is in the chip giant’s court to win back lost business from the Mac making Apple.

“My job is to win them [Apple] back and to deliver products that are better than they can do themselves. We also want to win them over to more of our foundry offerings over time. And that just makes sense, right? Everybody wants to have multiple suppliers. And if we have the best process technology in the industry, of course, they’ll come our way,” Gelsinger said at Yahoo Finance’s All Markets Summit.

Not sure how to react to this statement. Is Gelsinger unaware of the brutally dumb anti-Apple campaign in high gear? Here’s a link to this high profile page on your web site, Pat.

Don’t miss that Apple-bashing video right towards the top. Way to win friends, there. Yeesh.

Real world Twitch streamers stunt for Apple TV+ Invasion

Apple:

Watch Twitch streamers BoxBox, xChocoBars, 72hrs, Joe Sugg, Emiru and more as their live feeds got invaded by aliens. What started with a sudden nosebleed, quickly got even weirder when eerie distortions began to take over. The day after it was revealed that it was a stunt for a new Apple TV+ series, Invasion.

Smart marketing stunt for the team behind the coming Apple TV+ sci-fi series, Invasion. The first episode drops this Friday.

All the videos from yesterday’s Apple Event

First off is “Start Up”, a song made by A. G. Cook from 45 years of Mac startup sounds. It played at the open of yesterday’s Apple Event, and really set the stage for what was coming later in the show.

Here are the sounds used in the video:

iMac G3 Startup, MacBook Pro Startup, AirPods Case Closing, iOS Alert, HomePod Minimum Volume, iPod Click Wheel, Note Alert, Email Whoosh, MagSafe Charger, Night Owl Ringtone, HomePod Nope, HomePod PingPong, Mac 2020 Alert, Empty Trash, Message Sent, Message Received, HomePod Device Identify, iPhone Keyboard, Airdrop Invite, Mac Sosumi, Apple Pay

Next up is “Pro Apps. Pushed to the Max”. I love the complexity of the elements throughout this video. I’ve watched it a few times, just to home in on specific scenes and the powerful special effects I assume are all done on one of the new MacBook Pros. Pay special attention from. about 1:19 to 1:50. Look at all those elements and transitions. Amazing stuff.

Next up is the HomePod mini intro, with those vibrant new colors, the new AirPods video, and the real star of the show, the video showcasing the brand new MacBook Pros. And last up is the event itself, if you did not get a chance to watch it, or want to watch it again.

Intel’s terrible Apple-bashing ad

Start by watching the ad (embedded below).

This from the headline-linked post:

I know that when it comes to tech news, there can be somewhat of a bubble, with writers and readers thinking that certain things are more well-known to the general public than they are. But really, if you’ve walked into Best Buy’s laptop section at some point in the past decade, you probably would’ve seen some of the things the people in the ad are shell-shocked by: two-in-one laptops that fold to become a tablet have been popular since the early 2010s, Intel’s been pushing laptops with two screens since 2018, and PC gaming was a thing before the original IBM Personal Computer that popularized the term “PC.”

Exactly.

The ad has the potential to make a point about expandability and repairability. Fair issues to raise, if you indeed have a better solution. But it insults (badly) the very people it hopes to sway.

Yeesh.

Running on the roof of Apple Park

One of the highlights of April’s M1-revealing Apple event was the Mission Impossible scene, with an Apple exec running on the roof of Apple Park, then breaking into HQ (for a refresher, watch the first video embedded below).

For a reveal on how the stunt was done (yup, there was actual running on the roof of Apple Park), watch the second video. Pretty great.

Apple markets state tax holiday, starts this Friday in Alabama

Amazing reimagined launch of Original 1984 Macintosh

You know doubt remember that historic, original 1984 Macintosh commercial. If not, you can watch it here.

With that as fuel for your memory, take a look at the video below, where designer Thibaut Crepelle pulled together an amazing, high res reimagining of an ad for that very first Macintosh.

Apple Japan’s Apple Watch ad

I love watching international Apple ads. Often, they are the same as the US ads, with dubs, but some are unique to their markets.

International Loop fans, if you encounter an Apple ad unique to your country or region (not simply a dub), please do send it my way.

Intel ad for ‘World’s Best Processor’ features a MacBook Pro

Sami Fathi, MacRumors:

In a slight slip-up, however, Intel has accidentally used a MacBook instead of a Windows laptop in one of its newest ads to promote one of its new 11th-generation chips as “the world’s best processor.”

Follow the headline link, check the ad. That’s a MacBook Pro, from this Getty Images stock photo page, tagged as:

Hipster asian man playing games on a laptop at home

Who writes these captions?

Caption aside:

But while Apple still sells Intel-based Macs, the chip referenced in the ad is not used in any Mac, and in fact, it was launched around the same time Apple released its M1 Apple silicon chip late last year.

This just does not feel well thought through.

iPhone 12. Fumble. An ad.

I laughed at this ad. Mostly cause I’ve done that dance so many times.

Relax. It’s iPhone.

The new Justin Long PC vs Mac commercials

Intel brought Justin “I’m a Mac” Long on board to betray his long-time, adoring Mac fans and pick up a paycheck.

Five ads, all embedded below. Honestly, hard to fault Justin for cashing in here, but the ads themselves remind me of the varied Samsung ads over the years. Attacking Apple by painting a very jaundiced picture of Apple gear and an overly rosy picture of Intel gear.

I especially object to that last spot, based completely on the premise that you can only plug one display into your Mac. That one has got to come with a gigantic asterisk. Here’s Apple’s tech note on achieving more than one display. Depends on the Mac. But certainly not fair to say you can’t do it.

Side note: To borrow a phrase from my brother, there’s gotta be pictures in the attic of both Justin Long and Paul Rudd that are starting to grow crows feet.

AirPods Pro — Jump

This is a beautiful ad. Lots of great moments. Like that bit about :48 in when the neon sign and barber pole are stripped to make jump ropes. Beautifully done.

And about 1:15 in, that wonderful shift to animation.

Or that moment at 1:32 when our hero clicks to transparent mode to let the background audio in, then clicks back to noise cancelation.

Really great ad. With some excellent music.

Apple releases iPhone 12 Ceramic Shield ad

Apple:

iPhone 12. More spill and splash resistant than ever. Ceramic Shield, tougher than any smartphone glass. Relax, it’s iPhone.

“Relax, it’s iPhone”. That tagline is eerily reminiscent of this old chestnut.

Here’s the new Ceramic Shield ad. That’s one sloppy chef.

1984 Macintosh promotional video, starring Bill Gates

[VIDEO] This week marks the anniversary of the original Macintosh rollout. Last week I posted a pair of videos showing the rollout and a marketing video Apple sent around to Apple retailers.

Next up is this more widely shared promotional video (embedded in main Loop post) with a starring role by a very young Bill Gates. Enjoy.

Surfing Santas

[VIDEO] See if you can guess what this is an ad for. Kinda fun. Video embedded in main Loop post.

Tell me this doesn’t look like an Apple ad

[VIDEO] This ad (embedded in main Loop post) dropped last month, an homage to Singin’ in the Rain, but designed to sell Burberry product.

I love this ad, wonder how much of this is CGI, how much practical effects. No matter, to me, has all the feel of an Apple ad.

Side note: In the original Singing in the Rain, linked above, that’s Carrie Fisher’s mom at the beginning of the scene.

Oh Samsung

Filipe Espósito, 9to5Mac:

Right after the Apple event in October, Samsung mocked the company for not including the power adapter in the iPhone 12 box and also removing it from the older models. Now, as some rumors have predicted, the Galaxy S21’s documentation suggests that it will also not come with a charger included in the box.

It’s uncanny how quickly this happened.

Samsung went from big ads with pics of a charging brick and the tagline, “Included with your Galaxy” to removing the brick from the box. So quickly, that I can’t help but think they knew they were removing the brick while they were designing the “we’ve still got a brick” ad campaign.

Yeesh.

HomePod mini holiday ad

[VIDEO] Nice spotlight ad, featuring a pair of songs by Tierra Whack. Video embedded in main Loop post.

Apple’s fantastic iPhone 12 Pro movie making ad

[VIDEO] Yeah, I love this one (video embedded in main Loop post). Makes me feel like grabbing a wheelie chair, some duct tape, and a bunch of props and making a some experimental films.

Just the feelings Apple was trying to inspire, I suspect.

The most powerful iPhone ever

[VIDEO] Last week, we posted the Chris Rock iPhone 12 Verizon 5G commercial. Definitely on my long list of favorite iPhone spots.

Encountered this commercial over the weekend, equal time for AT&T. Wondering if the same team at Apple drove both of these ads. Seem different as night and day. Judge for yourself. Video embedded in main Loop post.
