Not only that, according to the original report, the customer noticed that it was a demo unit after inspecting the sticker on the bottom, but instead of simply returning it to Target, she decided to call a local news agency. You know, for justice.

Except it wasn’t. Did you bother to read? It was a demo unit preloaded by Apple with the same stuff all their demo units are filled with. You know, so when people go up and play with a demo unit, it’s not some empty iPad with nothing to demo.
The idiocy of this story is that the woman noticed it was a demo unit, and didn’t put two and two together. She thinks there’s some real “woman from California” with tons of professionally shot photographs and profile pictures.
So she realized the box said demo unit, but still managed to believe this was some iPad to belonged to a woman in California, and called the news because she was “concerned for her privacy.” Well, that makes perfect sense, totally concerned for a mythical persons privacy, yet completely airs it out on the news for the whole country to see. Logical.
I’m weary of Target. Been to the one in East York a handful of times, and half of them, there was only one self-checkout open, (no personnel registers).
The worst was when I was among a huge lineup of ten people, and the clerk was “helping” the customer, trying to pay with a gift card, or over drafted debit, who knows, while the rest of the registers were down. Took 10 minutes for a staff member to come over and man a regular register.
Haven’t gone back since.

The CTV news team that handled this story, on the other hand, should have known better. If you want to point your anger and hatred at someone, point it at them.
She could have easily thought this was labeled demo specifically because it had been previously used and returned by someone else – maybe that’s how demo units are chosen – and then whoever was in charge of wiping it didn’t do so. Not everyone spends their entire lives devoting themselves to knowing the ins and outs of how Apple do their thing. The real stupidity lies with the news team that still went ahead and ran this as a news item. They should have known better.
