There are a lot of approaches to getting rid of wall-warts, those blocky power transformers that let you plug your low-voltage, battery-powered USB products into the wall to charge.
But this one is a little more elegant than most.
Newer Technology has designed a two receptacle in-wall outlet called “Power2U” that also has two USB receptacles arranged so you can use all four simultaneously.
Clever idea but we may need vendors to start making USB cables even longer.
It doesn’t say if they’re surge suppressed. Before I rely on it to charge my (usually expensive) toys, that’s something I’d need to know.
I saw such USB outlets on the Macworld/iWorld show floor last week. Newer isn’t on the exhibitor list, but an outfit called Current Werks is, so it must have been them.
“The list price is $40 an outlet, although they can be found for less online. Newer Tech also charges less for bulk orders. You can buy a 100-pack for $4,000, if you have a very, very big house.”
That’s some bulk discount they got there.
I just ordered some 10 ft iPhone charge cables from Griffin. They’ll go perfectly with these.
