The numbers were off but the news was right: Electronic Arts (EA) has purchased casual game publisher PopCap Games for $650 million. The deal is expected to close in August.
[ad#Google Adsense 300×250 in story]Previous reports pegged EA’s acquisition of PopCap closer to $1 billion. In addition to the $650 million, PopCap gets $100 million in shares of EA stock, and 2013 financial incentives worth up to $550 million.
PopCap is the publisher behind monster casual game hits like Plants vs Zombies and Bejeweled. EA is perhaps best known for its long list of hit games for video game consoles and PC. EA has in recent years focused on the casual game market, however – the company acquired Playfish in 2009 and earlier this year acquired Firemint, the iOS developer behind Flight Control and Real Racing HD.
