∞ Airfoil 4.5 improves iOS, iTunes, AirPlay support, more

Rogue Amoeba has announced the release of Airfoil 4.5, and it’s a significant update to the audio software for Mac OS X. Changes include improved iOS, iTunes and AirPlay support, and much more.

[ad#Google Adsense 300×250 in story]Airfoil 4.5 lets you stream audio from any iOS device, partly thanks to the AirPlay functionality now built in to these devices. With the new version, you can now send audio from iTunes on Mac OS X or Windows to Airfoil Speakers.

AirPlay is now showing up in non-Apple products: JBL, Denon, iHome and other companies have licensed the technology from Apple and are now building speaker systems that support AirPlay directly. Airfoil 4.5 now lets you send audio from your Mac to any device that supports AirPlay.

Remote control support was introduced in version 4, allowing you to pause playback and skip tracks. The 4.5 release includes support for new remote sources like Spotify, Rdio and Radium. It also now shows more information about the music you’re listening to, like track info and album artwork.

Rogue Amoeba notes the release of a new 3.0 version of the Windows version of Airfoil, and says a new version of Airfoil Speakers Touch (the iOS audio receiver app) is currently in review. and should be available through the App Store soon.

Airfoil 4.5 costs $25; it’s free for licensed Airfoil 4 users.
