Rockstar Games announced late Thursday plans to produce its “Grand Theft Trilogy” for the Mac. Details are sketchy, though they indicated the games would be released “most likely later this year.”
The trilogy will include three controversial Mature-rated games that have never been released for the Mac before – Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Grand Theft Auto III made its debut in 2001 for the Playstation II. It was later ported to Windows and Xbox. The game puts players in the role of a bank robber who rises in prominence as he commits bolder and more daring crimes, working for crime gangs and other hoodlums. Vice City and San Andreas are later installments of the Grand Theft Auto franchise featuring different locations and a different cast of characters, but offering similar gameplay.
The Grand Theft Auto series is a 3D action-adventure game franchise sometimes referred to as a “sandbox” game. The environments offer players the ability to explore the world and participate in series of missions at your whim, rather than being required into resolve tasks or goals in a linear fashion.
Grand Theft Auto games have stirred up lots of controversy over their years for their glamorization of the thug lifestyle – to “win” you have to commit crimes. Individual Grand Theft Auto titles have also fallen under the gaze of government watchdogs who have voiced concern over their appropriateness for younger players, despite the prominent M rating of the games, which denote their suitably only for players age 17 and older.
“We’ll have much more info and a proper announcement soon,” read the announcement, which Rockstar made in its “Asked & Answered” blog.
It’s unknown how the games are coming to the Mac, specifically, but one educated guess might be through Valve’s Steam game service, as all three of the Grand Theft Auto titles are available for the PC already through Steam.
