Concurrently with the introduction of its Magic Trackpad, Apple introduced its first Apple Battery Charger, a $29 device that charges AA NiMH rechargeable batteries.
The charger is a wall wart – a bulbous device that plugs directly into an AC outlet and charges up to two batteries at a time. Like the AC adapters included with the MacBook and MacBook Pro, the plug is removable and the power supply is auto-switching, so you can replace it with different jacks to work in plugs around the world. It comes with six batteries- enough to power both the Wireless Apple Keyboard and the new Magic Trackpad or Magic Mouse, and two more to have on hand as a spare.
Apple emphasizes the green quality of the new charger, which it says has the lowest standby power usage value (known colloquially as “vampire draw”) of any similar charger on the market – 30 mW, versus the industry average of 315 mW.
